Global Shapers YEG hosted our second annual Unmuted in-person networking event on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023 at CRAFT Beer Market!

YEG Global Shapers hosted its inaugural Unmuted event in 2022 as our communities began to open up again after the pandemic and in-person connection opportunities resumed. The event was intended to offer an avenue of face-to-face connection after a long-period of connecting through screens or lacking meaningful in-person connection at all, and hearing "I think you're still on mute!" multiple times a day in video conference calls that our days were riddled with.

A year later, our world still looked different than it did before 2020, but what remained true was a desire for community and connection. We were thrilled to once again offer an avenue to bring together young professionals in Edmonton from all disciplines to show up fully "unmuted" and meaningfully connect, in-person.

The Alberta provincial election was on May 29th, 2023. Historically, youth (18-34) represent a lower percentage of the voting with a greater discrepancy between population counts and registered voters versus other age groups. Barriers to youth voting identified in the 2015 National Survey highlighted a low motivation to vote and access concerns.

This project aimed to address barriers to youth voting through an information campaign to connect youth to accurate information on election candidates, spread awareness about the voting process and how to vote, and inform youth why their vote matters in the 2023 provincial election.

Global Shapers Edmonton hosted our first Clothing Swap in collaboration with Life Preloved! We put this event on to include people new to thrifting and unsure about where to start the sustainable decluttering of their wardrobe, and find cool pieces!

This event was part of the Global Shapers Edmonton’s ReLove YEG project aimed at tackling the global issue of fast fashion on a local level in Edmonton. Attendees also had a chance to win a tote bag from Poppy Barley for completing our ReLove YEG Survey! Folks from Fashion Revolution Canada were in attendance alongside Shapers to meet and greet the guests and tell them about the other exciting projects we have going on in the city!

As part of an ongoing partnership with the Autism Society of Alberta, Global Shapers Edmonton started a financial literacy series to share information on fundamental topics with this audience.

The three-part series focuses on income, budgeting, and loans/investments, and these topics were presented to the beneficiaries with an attention to their learning styles. Each segment ended with a question period that allowed for the audience to gain further context into the topics, whether it was on paycheques, employment benefits, or taxes. Finally, relevant local resources (free, paid, and public) were highlighted and provided so that the topics covered could act as the start of a journey to improved financial resilience.

"I think you're still on mute!" are words we've each heard as we tried to recapture the moments before we fumbled with the unmute button. Staring at the glow of pixelated colleagues and friends was the reality over the last two years and it’s time for us to interact in the moment again, unmuted. Global Shapers YEG was thrilled to be able to host a networking evening IN-PERSON.

The power of face-to-face time (and not just FaceTime) has proven its worth as we began to discover interacting with each other again. With this inaugural event, we wanted to bring together young professionals in Edmonton from all disciplines to come and do what we’ve been yearning to do...meaningfully connect, in-person.

Our goal for the event was to bring together young professionals from different industries and professions to mingle, share ideas, and create new connections. We also shared what the diverse Global Shapers YEG team has been doing to make Edmonton an even better place to be!

On March 10, 2022, GYLN and Global Shapers Edmonton hosted "Mind and Money: Wellness for International Students", a workshop focused on financial literacy empowerment and development of healthy coping strategies for stress.

This workshop involved interactive discussion sessions on a wide range of financial management topics. We guided the audience on how to overcome unique barriers international students face regarding financial security. Topics covered included managing debit/credit, employment, personal taxes, budgeting & planning, and relevant resources specific to international students. As a small token for attendees, gift cards were handed out to keep people thinking about money!

The Global Shapers Edmonton Hub and Oliver Community League hosted an All-Candidates Federal Forum on Thursday, October 10, 2019. With help from the Queen Mary Park and Downtown Edmonton community leagues, we held the Forum in the heart of Edmonton. The first hour was a moderated program in which all candidates were asked a series of questions covering general areas of federal policy, followed by another hour of questions from the audience and select pre-screened questions.

All Candidates were invited and brought campaign literature and materials. Guests were encouraged to ask questions, get in touch with any candidates of interest, and get involved in our Democratic process.
