A Guide to Networking

Attending a networking event can be intimidating, especially when you’re out of practice. With Zoom networking on the way out and in-person networking coming back, here are my quick tips to be effective at a networking event:

  1. Do some homework

Show up prepared for the event! Ensure you know the dress code, the background of the organization/company hosting the event, whether food or drink will be served, and if there are any individuals of note at the event.

  2. Go with a goal

Always go to a networking event with a goal in mind to push yourself. It will give you motivation to make the event a success as well as adds an element of fun. A few examples of goals include:

    • Meet 3 new people

    • Tell one person about your passion project

    • Make 5 new connections on LinkedIn

  3. Ask questions

It is a fact that people love to talk about themselves! If you find yourself unsure with how to approach a conversation or keep the conversation going, ask questions. Some great prompts to help you out:

    • Why did you attend the event?

    • Is there a book, video or article that you really love or recommend?

    • Are you on the career path you thought you’d be in high school?

    • Do you have any advice for someone trying to develop a career in your field?

  4. Follow-up

If you made great connections, follow-up within 24 hours. It can be easy to forget about your connections and in turn for them to forget about you. A LinkedIn request can be a great start to building a further relationship with someone you met!

Bonus tip: include something unique you learned about the individual when sending a LinkedIn request or follow-up email. For example:

“Hi _____ , it was great to connect with you yesterday and meet someone who is also is an NBA fan. Would you be interested in grabbing a coffee and continuing discussing AI integration in the workplace?”
