Alberta Net Zero

In 2022, Alberta was ranked 9th out of 11 Canadian provinces and territories in energy efficiency rankings. A major contributing factor for this low ranking is the fact that Alberta does not have province-wide energy efficiency programs for low-income households despite rising energy costs. Although there are existing rebate programs in some cities in Alberta, available data shows that there are still a lot of energy-poor households with energy-inefficient homes across the province, especially in Edmonton and Calgary. Since Alberta relies heavily on fossil fuels for electricity and heating, the need for energy efficiency is urgent while transitioning to the use of cleaner energy in order to achieve achieve the Government of Canada’s commitment of a net-zero electricity grid by 2035 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

This project aims to support existing and upcoming municipal and federal energy efficiency programs and help address energy poverty by spreading awareness and bringing about province-wide action for a net-zero future.

This project will help spread awareness and bring about province-wide action through the following pillars:

  • Raising Awareness/Promotion

  • Education

  • Collective Action
