Financial Literacy

Financial literacy is an area that lacks scale and depth in the high school curriculum and in newcomers to Canada, leading to greater rates of financial problems for people later on in life. The Financial Literacy project strives to act as a voice for promoting changes in the Alberta Education curriculum; develop practical, engaging material and resources for the educator network; and connect organizations for newcomers to providers of financial literacy education.

A virtual presentation co-hosted with the Global Young Leaders Network was the most recent event undertaken by the project. Previously, a fireside chat series, including one with an elected city councillor on basic budget concepts, was created and is available on our YouTube channel. We’ve also developed material for key topics on financial literacy and provided these to the high school educator network to share and use in their curriculum.

Our most recent work involved a partnership with the Autism Society of Alberta to create a workshop series that touched on key financial literacy topics and communicated the content in an accessible way for the audience.
